Manitoba's Fire Red Negundo Maple Slim Pen

Maple of a pale white color, sometimes with a yellow/green tint similar to yellow poplar. The heartwood is a greyish/yellowish brown, often with red or pink streaks.

Red spot is produced by the tree's natural defenses when injured - this compound is believed to be intended to inhibit the growth of the fungus (Fusarium solani) that commonly colonizes the tree. Much of the reddish coloring (sometimes called "flame" by retailers) turns to a more muted pink or brown/gray as it dries.
